My absolute favorite quick healthy stop in and around the Berkeley campus. Super bummed to hear that it is closing. My go to salad was the superior chef's with roasted chicken, sometimes tofu. Protein always perfectly seasoned and cooked, and dressing options all so amazing. Cornbread is already talked up here, so I don't have to say much on that end except that it is always something I look forward to. Thank you, Smart Alecs, for being an affordable, fresh, fast, quality place to grab a nutritious meal. I already miss you, having graduated, but I will miss you more knowing you won't be there for the other college kids.

Simply delicious! Smart Alec's really does serve healthier versions of typical fast foods. I really love how they offer half combos so I'm able to sample more of the menu items without stuffing myself. I ordered the Soup and half Sandwich combo, which comes with a choice of cornbread, wheat bread, or fruit. I chose the Potato Leek soup, which was the soup of the day, the Tofu and Avocado sandwich, and a cornbread. -Potato Leek Soup: thick, chunky, and flavorful. I actually tasted a bit of the leek flavor instead of the mouthful of sodium that I usually get from chowder-type soups. -Tofu and Avocado Sandwich: Wow, I have never seen a more generous serving of avocado in a sandwich. The tofu was also cooked to perfection- not too soft and not too crispy. I really appreciated how fresh everything was; it was like eating a homemade sandwich made with the finest ingredients. -Cornbread: Although some of my friends have raved about this, I personally wasn't too impressed. It was a bit on the drier side, but definitely still satisfactory. Everything came out to be $8.54 including tax, which is a really good deal in my opinion. I was stuffed by the time I finished everything! If you're looking for both quality and quantity, Smart Alec's is the place to go!

Since Cafe Intermezzo closed down my freshman year, i've been trying to find a place that compares with the huge salads/sandwiches they had. This place is a good alternative for "healthier" options near campus. The portions are huge so I never end up finishing whatever I order. It's a great place to meet friends near campus. Service: During peak hours the place gets pretty packed. They're usually pretty fast though regardless. Ambiance: Nice corner shop that offers bar stools and regular tables for sitting. A pro is that they even stream the game when it's on. Food: - Cornbread: It's huge and i've always been a fan so no complaints here - Tacos: I came here after the gym once and was surprised they started serving tacos. I got the asada ones and they were delish! The sauce they had was quite spicy but SO GOOD with it. - I've also had various burgers, sandwiches, and salads here and portions are HUGE.

Great place for lunch or dinner and chatting with friends! :) Atmosphere: Came here around 12 pm and this place was getting pretty packed! Service: Many orders were on the cooks tv screen but they were workin it and our food came out at a decent pace. :) I ordered the Garden Delight salad with poppy dressing. First of all, this dressing is BOMB. I would buy a bottle of the dressing alone if they had it. Second, I ask if I could substitute the egg for avocados instead. The cashier was a bit hesitant and unsure of what to do since apparently avocados are $1 and eggs are $.80 or something. Idk but I said that I would pay the difference. The cashier didn't charge me for anything extra and it all worked out because the cooks gave me what I wanted and I'm a happy camper. Yayyyy! Food: Garden Delight salad with sweet poppy seed dressing - The dressing is AMAZING. Slightly sweet, slightly creamy, everything delicious! :) so I substituted egg for avocados and yumm loved how all the beam sprouts, tomatoes, carrots, greens, beans just went so well together with the poppy dressing. The portions are huge and lasted me two meals! WOOO! Another plus is that the meal comes with either cornbread or wheat bread. I got cornbread because this place has the BEST cornbread ever. Price: ~$7 including tax Tip: - sweet poppy seed dressing is the way to go - salads here are yummy! - Cornbread here is a MUST. Plus, the portion of it is HUGE! :D Conclusion: You bet I'll be back here to try all their other delicious and healthy things! :) love it here!
